Whereas, insurance fraud poses a threat to the financial well-being of the hard-working citizens of the state of Utah;
Whereas, fraudulent activities affect approximately 30% of Utah policyholders’ insurance premiums and are estimated to cost American businesses and consumers $308.6 billion annually;
Whereas, insurance fraud manifests in various forms including arson, fictitious thefts, staged accidents, fictitious injuries, premium fraud, organized fraud rings, application fraud, falsified documents, and healthcare and workers’ compensation fraud affecting individuals across all socioeconomic backgrounds;
Whereas, insurance fraud is a serious crime that requires the insurance industry and the state of Utah to dedicate resources to fight insurance fraud in the form of special investigation units and the Utah Insurance Fraud Division;
Whereas, public education plays a crucial role in raising awareness and preventing insurance fraud, empowering citizens to report incidents to the insurance company, the Utah Insurance Fraud Division, local Utah law enforcement and the National Insurance Crime Bureau; and
Whereas, in alignment with International Fraud Awareness Week, we recognize the importance of raising awareness about fraud prevention;
Now, Therefore, I, Spencer J. Cox, governor of the state of Utah, hereby declare the week of November 17-23, 2024, as
