Continuing Education
Continuing education (CE) requirement
(I) Utah resident producers and adjusters, excluding title producers, shall comply with the following CE requirements.
- A total of 24 hours of continuing education are required, of which:
- 12 hours must be in the classroom or classroom equivalent type courses.
- No more than 12 hours may be from courses provided by insurers.
- 3 hours must be in ethics training, and the remaining 21 hours can be in any line of insurance.
- All 24 hours must be from courses approved by the Utah Insurance Department.
- Proof of completion of continuing education hours must be kept on file with the producer. The Department may conduct random audits of producers by mail to verify their CE hours.
(II) Title producers shall comply with the following CE requirements.
- A total of 12 hours of continuing education are required, of which:
- 6 hours must be in the classroom or classroom equivalent type courses.
- No more than 6 hours may be from courses provided by insurers.
- 3 hours must be in ethics training, and the remaining 9 hours can be in any line of insurance.
- All 12 hours must be from courses approved by the Utah Insurance Department.
- If licensed for 20 or more consecutive years, a total of 6 hours is required, with 3 of ethics.
- Proof of completion of continuing education hours must be kept on file with the producer. The Department may conduct random audits of producers by mail to verify their CE hours.
(III) A nonresident producer who has complied with continuing education requirements in his/her home state is not required to complete additional CE for their non-resident license in Utah.
CE Exemptions
In accordance with 31A-23a-113(1)(b), a licensee whose license lapses due to military service, voluntary service for a period of time designated by the person for whom the licensee provides voluntary service, or some other extenuating circumstance, such as long term medical disability, may be exempt from the continuing education requirements in order to reinstate the license.
In accordance with 31A-23a-202(3)(d)(i), a licensee who was first licensed before December 31, 1982 may be exempt from continuing education requirements.
Producers holding and maintaining the following designations are deemed to have met the CE requirements: CLU, ChFC and RHU with completion of the PACE program; CPCU with completion of the CPD program; and CFP, REBC, CIC, ACSR, CRM, SOFE, or IRES with completion of their continuing education requirements.
To apply for an exemption, attach a current proof of good standing letter for your designation when paying the renewal fee. Then contact Michael Covington at email mcovington@utah.gov to inform her of your attached letter.
Title Only
In accordance with 31A-23a-202(3)(b)(i)(iii)(C), a title producer who is an active member in good standing with the State Bar, and has met the continuing education requirements of the Utah State Bar, is considered to have met the continuing education requirements for the Utah Insurance Department.
To apply for an exemption, attach a current letter of good standing from the Utah State Bar when paying the renewal fee. Then contact Michael Covington at email mcovington@utah.gov to inform her of your attached letter.
Locating Continuing Education Courses and Tracking CE Credits
Required CE must be completed prior to license renewal.
To locate CE courses in sircon:
- Go to sircon.com/utah.
- Select the option look up education courses/credits.
- Select the option approved courses inquiry.
- Select the state Utah.
- At the top where it says instruction method choose one ie, classroom (includes live webinars, teleconferences and courses held at the same location as the instructor), classroom equivalent (timed courses which can be taken at any time) , or self study (course material is given to the student to read and take an exam at the end of the course. Note only 12 hours of this kind of instruction method can be completed).
- Leave all other fields blank and click submit.
- Repeat selecting other instruction methods.
To view your CE transcript:
- Go to sircon.com/utah.
- Select the option look up education courses/credits.
- Select the option continuing education transcript inquiry.
- Select the state Utah.
- Follow the prompts to view your transcript.
- To view a previous renewal cycle CE, go to the top of the transcript and select education review period. Click the drop-down arrow and select the previous renewal cycle you are wanting to review.
